In a magic tournament run, Andres “Ace” Cabrera triumphed over Andrew “The Hunter” Dimalanta to win the 2020 Star Wars Tournament.

Cabrera began his run from the outside of the tournament looking in and having to beat Josh “The Jester” Quevedo to earn the 8th spot in this year’s tournament. He defeated Quevedo in a 20-17 TKO victory and followed it up 25-23 win over former champion, Ken “The Pitboss” Napzok. Then, Ace shocked the world by going perfect and defeating “Lights Out” Laura Kelly 31-29 to make it to the Star Wars Tournament Finals.

On the opposite side of the bracket, Dimalanta had to fight his way to the Finals as well. He opened with a flawless 32-31 win over “The Jedi” Joseph Scrimshaw in which both competitors were perfect at the end of regulation, and Dimalanta closed out the match in Sudden Death. The Hunter faced “Magic” Mollie Damon in the Semifinals, persevering through difficult rulings to win 25-22, and face off against Cabrera.

Ace went down early in the match, trailing Dimalanta 11-9 at the end of Round One. Both competitors were then perfect in Round Two, setting the score at 21-19 heading into the betting round. In Round Three, Cabrera and Dimalanta both picked up 3 PTS, and they stayed neck-and-neck through the speed round, each tacking on 6 PTS in Round 4. The score was set at 30-28 with one round remaining, and Ace blanked on his 2-point question before recovering on his 3-pointer. This hit bounced it back to Dimalanta who calmly answered his 2-point question to force Cabrera to hit his 5. Ace followed this up by laughing off his difficult 5-point question, jumping out to a 36-32 lead, and placing the ball back in The Hunter’s court. Unfortunately, Dimalanta was able to secure his 3-pointer, but not his 5-point question, leading to the final score of 36-35.

Andres “Ace” Cabrera earned a title shot with his win, moving on to play current champion, Alex “The Demon” Damon at Schmoedown Spectacular in December.

Andrew “The Hunter” Dimalanta also earned a title shot, despite the loss, but he will have to wait in line behind Cabrera.
