When you have an event as dense as Schmoedown Spectacular V, you need a palate cleanser. A fun, low stakes match that offers a reprieve from the tense matches that surround it. It allows the audience to relax, and enjoy themselves before the action ramps back up again. That was this match between Kevin “Good Enough” Smith and “The Trending Nightmare” ZaFlertinflouse.
Without missing a question, Smith (2-0) tops ZaFlertinflouse (1-1) by technical knockout with an 18-9 win in the battle of the unbeatens.
The match was initially scheduled to feature Brett “The Sniper” Sheridan taking on Smith until The Sniper had to take a step back from competing.
“I know some of you were really excited to see me take on Kevin Smith today,” Sheridan said before the match. “I was too, but I kinda let my lack of self-confidence and some of the comments I saw get to me. … I’m gonna have to bow out, but I found a replacement. Don’t worry, I’ve got somebody that I think has the knowledge and the confidence”.
Enter The Trending Nightmare, who transformed the event from a friendly competition into a grudge match.
“[Smith] tried to use his star power to get tickets for free, and I don’t offer free tickets to just anyone,” ZaFlertinflouse said coming into the match. “I was like, ‘Who is this Kevin Schmidt? I don’t know,’ and he stormed off in a huff, and it was not very nice. And, I don’t take kindly to that. I’m here today to send him away.”
“There is a sense of payback in this match,” Smith said. “I’m gonna try to keep it from getting personal, but it’s going to be tough not to be. … I’m holding a grudge against ZaFlertin. I’m gonna give ZaFlertin a hurtin’. You watch.”
Smith was not exaggerating. He opened with a 9-6 lead after a perfect first round and continued to pile on the Flouse from there. Good Enough elected to spin first in Round Two, picking up 7 PTS off of a 4/4 performance in the category of SNL Movies. That put ZaFlertinflouse in knockout territory with the gap at 12 PTS heading into the bottom of the second. Fortunately for The Trending Nightmare, he was able to post 3 PTS off a 2/4 performance in the category of Dwayne Johnson to avoid the knockout and extend the match into Round Three. However, the Flouse also gave up 2 1-point STLs to Smith, placing the score at a dangerous nine-point deficit at the end of the wheel round.
With the score at 18-9, ZaFlertinflouse had to hit all three questions in the final round in order to avoid the technical knockout. Unfortunately, a tough 2-point question in the category of Movie Release Dates proved to be too much for The Trending Nightmare, closing the match on an 18-9 TKO win for Smith and The Quirky Mercs.
Kevin Smith closes the game with a perfect accuracy rate through 15 questions and misses the perfect game by 1 point after checking to multiple choice once in Round Two.
“I was so in the zone,” Smith said following the match. “So zen, so Jedi, I was answering his questions. I really wanted to steal before I got [the] TKO, and I know you can’t steal in that round, but, like, I felt very comfortable. I feel I’m ready to take on bigger challenges.”
Following the win, Smith continues to look to the horizon, hoping to face off against “Dangerous” Dan Murrell at some point in the future.
“For me, when I look at the people, like, that I might be up against in the future, Dan [Murrell] is the one that certainly gives me a pause,” Smith said. “For example, on that release date question that ZaFlertin lost on, Murrell would never let that happen. He woulda not only given you the year, he would have given you the actual release date- the month and the day of the week and stuff like that. Plus tell you what was happening in the news, so he’s a ninja. He’s been doing it for a while, but it’s an area where I can compete. I feel very confident in competing.”
