Chandru “The Chosen” Dhadapani had a record year in 2020. He boasted career highs in PPE% and AR% at 91.5% and 94.5% respectively and became the first person since 2018 to defend the Innergeekdom title at Schmoedown Spectacular V. The Chosen had a brief misstep to start 2021 against “Tha Amazing” Mara Knopic, but now he is right back on the track towards deepening his legacy as one of the greats in the Innergeekdom Division.
Dhandapani (7-3) beat Robert “The Spider” Parker (4-2) in the Schmoedown Throwdown Main Event, by a score of 29-28 to earn the opportunity to regain his belt against Mike “The Killer” Kalinowski in July.
“I had a lot of expectations from Parker, and he definitely lived up to the expectations,” Dhandapani said of his opponent. “I’ve been a fan of his even during the fan leagues before either of us came into the league. I have always wanted to play him, and I am glad that we got a chance to do just that. This match is one for the ages.”
The Chosen was certainly right about this match being one of the best. Both competitors only missed one question in the match, and it came early with Parker dropping the first question and Dhandapani dropping the second, to end the first round tied at 9-9.
In Round Two, the former champion deferred his play until the bottom of the second and opened the door for The Spider to spin Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The category offered Parker a little more resistance than he was anticipating, as he was forced to check down to multiple choice once in an otherwise perfect round to score 9 PTS. Unfortunately for The Spider, if you leave a gap for the best players, they capitalize on it and that was exactly what Dhandapani was able to do. The Chosen scored a perfect round in the category of Dystopian Future/Time Travel to take a 1-PT lead heading into the final round of play.
Round Three left Parker counting on a miss with the score at 19-18, but that miss never came. The pair bounced back and forth on their final three questions until Dhandapani hit a difficult 5-pointer in Jurassic Park and won the match 29-28.
The win gives S.W.A.G. a much-needed 4 PTS and pulls them out of last place and into sixth with 13 PTS earned. The win also prevents the first-place Dungeon squad from expanding on their 11-PT lead as Dhandapani was quick to remind people following the match.
“To every other faction than The Dungeon,” Dhandapani quipped, “you’re welcome.”
Following the match, Dhandapani advances to take on Mike “The Killer” Kalinowski for the opportunity to regain his belt at an undetermined date in July. Despite his status as a 3-time Champion, The Chosen does not hold high regard for his upcoming opponent.
“This is a first for me. I have never played someone who is old enough to be my daddy before,” Dhandapani said in jest. “So, I’m going to have a lot of fun. Mike has been dodging me multiple times in these last two seasons and let’s hope that he doesn’t just vacate the belt so that he can avoid me. Because knowing Mike, he’ll want to ‘focus on Teams’ and ‘focus on Singles’ and he’ll probably say he’s ‘doing what’s best for his faction’ and so on because he’s afraid of me. He’s scared of playing me.”
