Frankie “The Animal” Alvarez was not the focus of his debut win. Between a controversial ruling in favor of “I Am Robot” and the collapse of Brother Lomis in Round Three, The Animal’s win flew under the radar early in the season.
This time around, however, there is nothing to distract from a gutsy win by the Usual Suspects rookie.
Alvarez (2-0) triumphed over Jessica “The Sleeper” Schloth (1-1) to earn a 20-19 victory in Sudden Death and remain untarnished in the Singles Division.
“I feel great,” Alvarez said following the win. “I am amped. I am pumped. I probably woke up my sleeping infant daughter upstairs. But, I don’t care because I’m 2-0 in the Movie Trivia Schmoedown.”
It was an easy path to get to The Animal’s second win in the Singles Division. At the end of the first round, he held a narrow 7-6 lead after missing just one question late in the first.
In Round Two, Alvarez deferred to Schloth who elected to keep the category of the 2010s in the top of the second. The Sleeper would go on to secure 6 PTS in the round but also offered up a 1-PT steal to The Animal that opened the door for Alvarez to widen the gap. Fortunately, the Suspects rookie would have no such luck. The Animal would go on to spin Jodie Foster in the bottom of the second, and only score a middling 5 PTS after a 4/5 performance. That performance also sent a 1-PT steal back to Schloth to tie the game at 13-13.
Despite both competitors’ best efforts, that stalemate would continue to hold through Round Three. The pair played identically in the final round of regulation, hitting their 2- and 3-point questions but missing their 5-pointer to hold tied at 18-18.
Eventually, a winner would need to be declared, and that winner would be The Animal. After three questions in Sudden Death, Alvarez finally pulled ahead of Schloth to secure the 20-19 victory and 2 PTS for the Usual Suspects.
“We prepare for every match as if we are facing a Dan Murrell,” manager Samm Levine said after the match. “So, it’s all about knowing where you are in the match and knowing what you need to do to get to the next spot in the match. We never trailed in that match. No matter what Kate [Mulligan] wants to say. We never trailed in that match from start to finish, and that is all I can ask for from anyone in the Usual Suspects and Frank did not disappoint.”
No future matches have been officially scheduled for Frankie Alvarez, but he has been taking some heat from Rick “The Rager” Raddus as of late. The Animal has no issue with meeting The Rager in the ring.
Rager, you better hope and pray you start living that lifestyle, bud,” Alvarez taunted. “Because I’ve been a rager way before you were even a thought. So, you better be prepared. You better be ready, and if you’re going to talk that talk, you better walk that walk because I’m coming full force at you. And, I’m hungry.”
